Enteroparasites of clinical importance in lettuce (Lactuca sativa) from the Markets in the center of the City of Oaxaca, Oax. Mexico

The objective of this study was to determine the presence of enteroparasites in lettuces that are sold in the Benito Juárez, 20 de Noviembre and Sánchez Pascuas markets in the center of the city of Oaxaca de Juárez, Oax. Mexico. A cross-sectional, descriptive, prospective, quantitative study was carried out, collecting 195 samples of lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The samples were processed by the methodology of Alvarez et al., (1981). And by the modified Ziehl Neelsen staining technique. A percentage of parasitic contamination was found in the Sánchez Pascuas market of 72.4 %, followed by the Benito Juárez market with 68% and on November 20 with 38.8 %. Obtaining Strongyloides spp. (28.2%), followed by Ascaris lumbricoides eggs (21.7%), Trichomonas spp. (11.5%), Blastocystis spp. (5.2%) and egg of Uncinaria spp. (0.8%). Due to the results found in this study, it recommends training to all those who make up the production chain, on the proper cultivation and handling of vegetables, the preventive monitoring of markets to search for parasites in fruits and vegetables.
