Quality of life in older people with hip fracture: Updated review
Keywords:
hip fracture, quality of life, elderly personAbstract
Introduction: Hip fractures (HF) are common injuries in older people, usually associated with bone fragility and pre-existing medical conditions. This injury can result in a number of challenges that influence multiple aspects of their quality of life. Objective: to demonstrate the influence of hip fracture on quality of life in the elderly. Methodology: descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study. The information was compiled from PubMed, Google Academy, Chocrane. Results were obtained from 150 research studies, inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, discriminating a total of 28 articles used for the development of this article. Results: HF is very prevalent in older adults, mainly associated with risk factors such as age, female sex, diseases such as sarcopenia and osteoporosis. Complications of HF are delirium and anemia. The consequences of HF on HRQOL are immobilization, loss of autonomy, dependence, impairment of functionality, institutionalization, chronic pain, depression. Tools are used to measure the quality of life associated with various factors, such as the WHOQoL-Old scale, the Barthel index, the Charlson index and the SF-36 scale. Discussion: Hip fracture in older adults is a serious health problem that can have a profound impact on patients' quality of life. Numerous studies have explored the relationship between hip fractures and quality of life, and have generally found a significant association between injury and decreased quality of life in different aspects. Conclusions: Hip fractures in older adults can significantly affect their quality of life, causing pain, immobility, and limitations in activities of daily living. These effects can lead to physical complications and can also have emotional and psychological consequences, such as anxiety, depression and decreased self-esteem.
