Abstract

Pathogens in pet foods are microorganisms that can cause disease in animals that eat them. Some of the common pathogens that may be present in pet food include Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter, Clostridium perfringens, and toxigenic fungi.

It is important to note that properly formulated and processed pet foods are generally designed to eliminate or minimize the presence of pathogens. In addition, pet owners are advised to handle and store food correctly, following the manufacturer's instructions, to prevent the proliferation of pathogens, promote the generation of mycotoxins in the food, and protect the health of their pets.

In this context, mycotoxins are toxic substances produced by fungi that can contaminate pet food. These toxins can be found in ingredients such as grains, seeds, and other agricultural products that are used in the manufacture of pet food. Some of the more common mycotoxins include aflatoxins, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, and ochratoxin A.

Control of mycotoxins in pet food is essential to ensure animal safety.

The control of pathogens and undesirable substances in pet food is crucial to guarantee the safety and quality of the products. Here are some key measures and practices that are commonly used in the pet food industry to control pathogens and undesirable substances such as; 1. Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), 2. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), 3. Ingredient selection and testing, 4. Quality control and testing, 5. Thermal processing, 6. Product labeling and transparency, 7. Supplier audits and quality assurance, 8. Regulatory compliance, 9. Withdrawal procedures and 10. Continuous improvement.
