Hip fracture in older people: Orthogeriatric approach from an updated review
Keywords:

Hip fractures (HF) are common injuries in older people, usually associated with bone fragility and pre-existing Hip fracture is a trauma condition managed by traumatologists; these professionals are less familiar with the rest of the problems presented by these patients. Therefore, collaboration between geriatricians and traumatologists should be managed together, this is defined as "orthogeriatrics". The objective is to carry out a literature review on hip fractures in the elderly from the orthogeriatric approach, a descriptive and retrospective study was carried out. The inclusion criteria were the availability of articles from indexed journals, books and official web pages, in English and Spanish, articles not older than the last 7 years. As for the results, orthogeriatrics is the multidisciplinary approach for the management of patients with hip fracture, covering diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation where each professional plays an indispensable role; prevention is focused on identifying possible fracture risks. In patients with hip fracture, receiving orthogeriatric care in various models reduces long-term mortality compared to standard care. In conclusion, the orthogeriatric approach to hip fracture allows for adequate orientation and guidelines in the management of the disease, as well as the integration of all clinical aspects.
